Notes for MOSES ROGERS:

_Assume Moses is the son of Moses and Mary "Polly" Anderson.

1.They have the SAME NAME.

2.The Older Moses' known son Thurman( From Thurman's Death Certificate) is married to Patience(From Thurman's Death Certificate), the sister of Moses's wife Sarah Church.

3.James Rogers Sr.'s property on the N.Fork of the Clinch is 18 MilesN.W. of the Courthouse.

He is living next to Jacob Roller N.Fork of the Clinch is 18 Miles N.W. of the Courthouse.

In 1860 Moses and Sarah were next to Andrew Roller (grandson of Jacob Roller, Sr.) and

Andrew H. Nelley and also David Neely age 97.

In 1860, Harrison Neely is living in Ky., but, his property is N.Fork of the Clinch River,

18 Miles N.W. of the Courthouse.

Harrison Neely is the GRANDSON of David, age 97, who is in Scott Co.,Va. living next to our Moses.

Harrison's Father, William went to Kentucky about 1856, as did Harrison, but, his much older Grandfather stayed in Va..

Property could be handed down for up to 100 years without registering again at the Courthouse. All of these younger generations are not listed on the Land Tax Lists, only the origional names were used, even 30 years after their death. As in the case of James Rogers, Sr. Est.. This was how it was listed on the1860 Land Tax List, he died in 1829.

(Jesse Rogers Land is 22 Miles West of the Courthouse. Neely's, Roller's and James Rogers Est. are all 18 Miles N.W. of the Courthouse. Our Moses on the 1860 Census is next to Roller's, and Neely's)

4. Moses Rogers and Sarah left Scott Co.,Va. after 1860, and went to Hawkins Co., War Gap District, Tenn. by 1870, and then, moved back to Scott Co.,Va. to the SAME PLACE with the SAME NEIGHBORS, even though, he had no land in his name.

5. Names were used over and over in his line as well, Spencer, James, Thomas,George, Joseph.

( The 1880 Census District 79 where Moses was has this description All of Powell (Mountain) Magisterial District lying South and West of a line of a line beginning in the Estiville (Gate City) and Jonesville Turnpike where it crosses the line of Estillville District, thence with said road to Henry J. Jennings house( they voted there Page 140), thence with the main road via Fairview to the Tennessee line.)

In January, 1851, the county was again laid off into six districts...

Powell Beginning on the top of Powell's Mountain, at the northwest corner of the township of Taylor; thence running with the top of said mountain and with the Lee County line, to Virginia and Tennessee state line; thence with said line to the top of Clinch Mountain, to the corner of the township of Estillville

In 1870 our Moses was in Tn., but, in Va.:

Jacob Roller (grandson of Jacob Roller,Sr.,son of Elias, and brother of Andrew{on 1860} and wife Letty Neely(daughter of Andrew Neely on the 1860 next to our Moses) are living next to Andrew Neely.

The Census order in 1880 is Andrew Roller,Anderson's( Andrew's Step children), Moses Rogers, George Church( Sarah's Brother).

Dear Kenneth,

The information that you forwarded a few days ago, sent me in a tizzy checking even more! I wanted to make sure, that,I did not make a mistake regarding the Father of Moses. Jesse was in the area, but, when, I went back to the Land Tax lists, Jesse was in a different place than Moses , Roller's and Neely's.These three were all together on the Census, on the Land Tax Records all were 18 Miles N.W. of the Courthouse . Jesse was 22 Miles W.

The information ,that, you forwarded, said, Jesse and Lucinda (Rice) Rogers. They had 6 sons, 7 are thought to be children of this couple. The key word is THOUGHT!

Then they listed Moses as a possibility, but they had no proof!

I don't have a Family Bible or a Census with Moses as a child, but what I do have seems like the Proof!

Rebecca Rogers

Dear Eleanor,

Thanks for the information about Jesse. I didn't think I was wrong, but, when someone else differs, You question. After, I did more checking on the Neely's, and knew that David Neely was next to our Moses on the 1860 Census and he was 18 Miles N.W. of the Courthouse. I am sure that Moses is on James Rogers, Sr.'s property, 18 Miles N.W. of the Courthouse.

Henry x Church (seal) (his mark)

Signed, ealed & published in our presence and we have subscribed our names hereto in the presence of the Testator Nov. The 5th, 1844 B.C. Ford, David x Hickman, Henry Reed

We know ,that, Moses and Sarah were married before 1850 sometime, because, on the 1860 Scott Co., Va. Census, daughter Nancy was age 10.

We also know that she died between 1880, when ,she was on the Census, and 1906, when, Docia Ann Rogers Roberts said, her Grandfather Moses came to live with her, in Bonham, Fannin Co., Texas.

Her Father, Joe Cephas ( Joe S.) had moved there. He had gone out to Utah & Idaho when he was a boy about 15 years. His oldest bro. (George) was out in Utah hearding sheep.

Grandpa Moses passed away at our house. One of my Dad's bro.'s lived on a farm not far from us. His name was George. He had a large family. I can remember visiting them a lot of times. Mama used to ride our race horse out to visit them sometimes. Uncle George died while we were in Texas.

So now, we know we have two Church sisters, Agnes SARAH and Patience, who married two brothers. Patience and Thurman Rogers, and, Sarah and Moses Rogers.
