Edward Porteus

Edward Porteus , lived at "Poropotank", in Virginia, which later came to be known as Violet Banks.  The home no longer stands.  Edward Porteus  had:

Robert Porteus , Esq.  of Newbottle, Virginia, son of Edward Porteus , b. ca. 1679; d. 8 Aug 1758, Newbottle, VA[i], at age 79 years; bur. Ripon Cathedral, England; m 1st 17 Aug 1700, Purton, Gloucester, VA to Mildred Smith , daughter of John & Mary (Warner) Smith , b. 20 Feb 1682, Purton, Gloucester, VA; d. bef. 1728; m 2nd Elizabeth Jennings , daughter of Edmund & Frances (Corbin) Jennings , b. ca. 1694; d. 20 Jan 1754, Nansemond Co., VA.  Robert Porteus had a total of nineteen (19) children by his two wives.

Robert Porteus , Esq. , left Virginia in 1720, and settled in England at York (and later at Ripon) for the purpose of procuring for his children better instruction than he could obtain in Virginia.  He was a native of Virginia, member of His Majesty's Council or Upper House of Legislature in that Province.

Mildred Porteus , daughter of Robert & Judith (Cockayne) Porteus , b. 1744, Bedford Co., VA; chr. 8 Oct 1744; d. 1815; m. Robert Hodgson  of Congleton Co. Chester, England, b. 1740.  Robert & Mildred (Porteus) Hodgson  had:

a.  Rev. Robert Hodgson , b. 1776; d. 1844; m. 1804 to Mary Tucker .
