The origin of the last name
In the early records of Virginia, we find where a William Anders who was of Scotch-Irish descent landed there in the late 1600’s and settled near Hopewell, Virginia.
William Anders had a son:
Thomas Anders[iii], son of William Anders , b. ca. 1690, Hopewell, VA; d. will probated 1737, Hillsborough, NC.
It was Thomas Anders who landed in the Hopewell, Virginia area in the late 1600’s. He migrated from Virginia to Hillsborough, NC in the early 1700’s and settled in the Hillsborough district. In his will, which was probated in 1737, he mentions three children: Bell, Robert and Penelope.
Thomas Anders and his wife had three (3) children[iv]:
1.
Bell Anders
, b. ca. 1690, Hopewell, VA
2.
Penelope Anders
, b. ca. 1690, Hopewell, VA
3.

.
Robert Anders migrated from the Hopewell area of Virginia to the Hillsborough area of North Carolina in the early 1700’s. As his father also migrated to North Carolina around this same time they most likely did so together.
Robert Andrews , a Quaker, left a will in Orange Co., NC dated 12 Jan 1792, proved Aug 1793, witnessed by John Carter and James Woody .
Robert & Sarah (Unknown) Anders had nine (9) children:

He was named an executor in his father’s will. [It is not known for certain that this William Anders is in fact the William mentioned in the will of Robert Anders dated 12 Jan 1792, Orange Co., NC.]
He is listed as providing a patriotic service.
William Anders left a will that was probated 2 Feb 1824. The will mentions ten children, five of these children lived in Ashe Co., North Carolina at sometime between 1800 and 1859. Although his will does not identify his wife, it is the belief of some that his wife was Mary Lloyd **. However it appears that the only connection that he may have had with her was in his capacity as Constable, at which time he presided over the sale by auction of a female slave to her.
