His family is also listed in the 1900 Greene Co., VA Census.  Once again James Henry Garton  is listed as head of household.  He is also shown as being born February 1843, age 57, and married 1 year.

James Garton  held various occupations. He was a farmer, carpenter and coffin builder.   In a listing in “Chataigne’s Virginia Gazetteer and Classified Buisness Directory Greene County – 1888-89”, J.H. Garton  of Dawsonville is shown as an Undertaker.  According to the marriage records of Greene County he was also a mechanic.  Family stories state that, when he planned a trip/outing it was usually delayed by a death in the community, as coffins during that time were not made prior to a death.

His 2nd wife, Amanda Josephine (May) Garton  was described by family members to be a gossiping little woman.  According to correspondence she never had any children of her own, but did adopt on her third marriage.  It would appear that William, Robert W., & Della Garton would be those those children[cxx].

James H. Garton ’s Confederate military service is well documented.  He enlisted as a private, in Co. H. 38th Virginia Infy (Pittsylvania Regiment), on either 9 Mar or 19 Mar 1863 at the Orange County Courthouse, Virginia, enlisted by Capt. Anderson , for a period of three (3) years.

Harry Sanders  has been researching the location of the family graveyard and once located having it preserved.  A Garton Graveyard has been found in Greene County, Virginia behind the old tavern on Route 609 just before entering into Orange County.

The graveyard is approximately 60’ x 84’ and is not fenced.  There are approximately 30 graves, including fieldstone graves and despression graves.  In the area where the old Tavern ws located the date of 1797 is scratched on one of the chimney bricks.

Located there are the following tombstones:

John H. Garton , January 5, 1849 – May 25, 1904

Louise (no family name), July 6, 1905 – March 9, 1907

Baby Boy (no family name), April 3, 1900 – April 9, 19900

If this is the correct Garton family graveyard, then Louise & the baby boy, would most likely be grandchildren of John H. Garton .

[xxii] The ancestors of John Garton  have not been proved.  I will look for the letter I got that included a copy of a letter from a Garton in Maryland in the 1950s. That letter claimed that John Zackery Garton was born 28 August,1809 (probably in Norfolk Co, VA). No Garton’s have ever been located in Norfolk Co, VA. It may be that he was born in Orange Co, VA.
