[i]

The Greene family could have originated from the Burwell section of England .

1619 Apl 22, The “ Sampson ”, Capt. John Ward  arrived with 50 emigrants.  They made a settlement above Martins Brandon, on what is still known as Ward’s Creek[ii]. [Note:  Ward’s Creek empties into the James River and would have formed a natural western boundary for Martins Brandon Plantation; there were a total of three mills on this creek during the colonial period[iii].]

After careful planning, the Indians struck at daybreak on Good Friday, 22 Mar 166 and over two-thirds of the white inhabitants – men, women, and children – were brutally murdered, livestock killed, and the area ravaged.  Another massacre took place in 1644 and again a large number of white inhabitants were killed.

From Cavaliers and Pioneers, by Nell Marion Nugent  we find:

  • Thomas Shippey  received 250 acres 14 Nov 1635, south upon land of Robert Greene [iv].
  • 1636/1637 Wm. Green , transported by Arthur Bayly  and Thos. Crosby  who rec’d land in Henrico County[v].
  • 13 Apr 1637 Robert Greene , transported by Patrick Kennedy  who rec’d land in Upper Co. of New Norfolk[vi].
  • 11 May 1639 George Greene  transported by Thomas Matthews  who rec’d 1100 acres in Henrico County [vii].
