Peter Greene

Peter Greene [i], b. ca. 1600[ii], England [iii]; d. bef 1667; m. Katheryne[iv] Unknown [v].  Katherine (Unknown) Greene , m 2nd after 1668 to John Salway .

????Peter Green ???? - 1658[vi].  There is an entry in the Surry Co., VA records, p. 39 which records the following: 3 7br 1661 – to Hon. Coll. Brown  the Humble Remonstrance of Peter Geen in protest of the oath administered, especially upon the commanders of the colony of which I was then one of the number, in behalf of my King & Countrye the which oath seems soe Destestable & soe Irreligious to me that I not only Refuse to take it but do utterly detest the thought of it, being the most damnable imposition contrary to the fundamental laws of the Kingdom, etc… [It would appear that he was just a bit upset over this matter.]

Peter  & Katherine Greene  were living in Surry Co., VA.

“Even though Lewis Sr. acquired land in Surry Co., there is no record of his inheriting land there nor is there any mention of him in the early records of Surry Co.”[vii]

He is shown as living in Surry Co., VA in 1630’s on Lawne’s Creek[viii].

On 11 Feb 1660 he is mentioned as Magistrate of Surry Co[ix].

On 2 9br 1653, Peter Greene  is found as a juror in the matter of the death of Jno. Briant , described as a boy and late servant of Jno. Spilltimber  and Jno. Brady [x].

On 3 Jul 1655.  Deposition of Richard Warrener , aged 20 years, that Richard Gossage  did depart this life in the home of Mr. Peter Green e …in the presence of him and Eliza . Sawyer  heard him tell Mr. Greene  that Gossage would give, and did give him, Peter Greene, compensation to satisfy Greene for “his diet and trouble.”  Signed:  Richard Warner .  Eliza Lawyer  or Sawyer , aged 24 years, also swore[xi].

In Apr 1655, Coll. Richard Meridale  acquitted Mr. Peter Greene of debt.  Wit.: Fra. Slaughter [xii].

Received a Land Grant of 200 acres with purchase of other land there from 1654-1664[xiii].

In 5 Mar 1656, Peter Greene  is listed with 200 acres on the southeast side of College Run ¼ mile below the mill.[xiv]

“Peter Green  was a contemporary of Lewis Greene  in Charles City Co. (now Prince George ) in 1658/1859.  Since Lewis Sr.  named a son Peter, they could have very well been related but, or so I believe, in some relationship other than father-son.  As Lewis Sr. did not die until ca. 1730, it is hard to believe that he and the Lewis who was an adult in 1658 are one and the same.  Again, I believe (but try not to be adamant on any point!) that Lewis Sr. was the son of the earlier Lewis. [xv]

On 5 9ber 1658.  Peter Greene  released of all debts to Edward Pettway  [wife Elizabeth ], Wm. Mitchell ; Hen. Soane .[xvi]

NOTES: Ardath Jo Green  1984/1985: “The name of Peter Green ’s wife was Katherine and this name was never used by the descendents of Lewis Sr.  Instead, Lewis Sr. had a daughter, granddaughter, sister, and niece with the name of Susanna/h and this could have been the name of his mother.  There is some reason to believe she was either a Parham or Gower.”
