Revolutionary Service:

John Vaughn  enlisted on 22 Nov 1777 in Captain William Brown's   Maryland artillery for the duration of the war.  John enlisted as a matross.  He was promoted to gunner, then to a sergeant.  He was at Valley Forge, Ft. Schuyler , White Plains , High Hills of the Santee , Pluckamin, Beacon's Ridge.  He was discharged in Apr 1783.

John Vaughan  was in Charlotte Co., VA by 1790.  He and his wife, Nancy lived in Halifax Co., VA until 1800, when they moved to Hawkins Co., Tennessee .  Their first two children were born in Halifax Co. VA the remainder were born in Hawkins Co., Tennessee .

John Vaughn never applied for a pension ... However, in 1858, his widow Nancy (Callicott) Vaughn did apply stating she had waited 14 years for someone to write it for her. Her application gives the entire history of her life with John. Attached to the back of the application is a list of the births of all the children ... Nancy did not receive the pension as she could not prove they were legally married. She said they "ran away" into Halifax County , Virginia , and were married by Parson Hays in his home on October 16, 1794. Mabel has located the farm that John and Nancy purchased in 1800 in Hawkins County (now Hancock County ), Tennessee . [xvi]

The Fereby Benton  Mystery[xxx]

By E.C. Davis [xxxi]

The following information is JUST THEORY, and comes from numerous sources, such as Vaughan books, discussion groups and letters from researchers. I don't claim that any of it is "The Gospel Truth".

Fereby lived to be a very old lady; she died in May of 1850 in Madison County, Arkansas, where she lived with her many descendants. My Great x 3 Grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Vaughan  lived with William  and Fereby  -his grandparents- for some years, and on October 27th, 1892 made a sworn deposition in a case that a relative had brought before the Cherokee Nation in OK. In this deposition, Ben , a former State Representative and 3 time Sheriff of Madison County, states that he knew that his Grandmother Fereby was commonly thought of as a Cherokee Indian by Blood. He wrote, " I also became acquainted with a Cherokee Indian in my boyhood who was in the habit of visiting my Grandparents and who claimed to be a cousin of my Grandmother. The Indian's name-Looney Tol-lem-Tees-Key, and was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation. (And further) That I was a grown up man at the time I knew him. That I have often heard the Roggers (sic) (John  and James ) say that the Vaughans should have a right in the Cherokee Nation and old Capt. John Roggers  wanted the deponent to remain in the Cherokee Nation while the deponent was there, for the reason that the Vaughans were descendants of the Cherokee Indians by blood."

This statement, taken by itself, means very little, as numerous whites tried to gain membership in the Cherokee Nation in the same way, and like Ben 's relative, George W. Vaughan , were denied, due to lack of evidence.  However, the Fereby the Cherokee story has much more to it then this. In Wayne County, West Virginia, I am told that another descendant made similar claims, and this was without contact with the Arkansas Vaughans. The oldest stories on Fereby say that she married Welsh trader William Vaughan  in the old Eastern Cherokee Nation. The LDS Church 's genealogy library found evidence that William and Fereby's son Thomas was born in the town of Cherokee , in modern day Swain County , NC . Cherokee (obvious from it's name) was one of the towns in Cherokee territory.

Ben Vaughan , in his deposition mentions that Fereby's mother's maiden name was Looney, and Fereby was a Benton . Some have said that Fereby's maiden name was Looney, but this is doubtful. Even her first name has been debated. Some claim her name was Fair-a-bee, meaning (wrongly, I might add) in Cherokee, Fair as a bee. Some spell it Fariby, Feriby, Fairaby and so on.

Some of the rumors and stories of Fereby that have not been proven are:

!      She was the daughter of a Cherokee Chief, either minor or semi-important.

!      She was a cousin to Chief Doublehead  and also to Chief Tahlonteeskee. There is said to have been a court case in Madison and Washington Counties , AR that mention this. Tahlonteeskee was chief in 1818 and married Jennie Lowry . He was the son of Robert Due , and Robert Due, by another wife, had a daughter, Jennie Due , who was mother of Chief John Rogers Jr., probably the one mentioned in Ben Vaughan 's deposition. Tahlonteeskee and Tol-Lem-Tees-key are similar phonically, but Ben gave the name Looney Tol-Lem-Tees-Key, which leads me to believe that this is not the same as Tahlonteeskee (which means "Woodchuck Catcher"). A descendant of Chief Doublehead, who is also a respected Cherokee researcher, rebuffed the theory that Fereby was Doublehead's cousin.

Some of the rumors that might have something to them are as follows:

!      Fereby was the daughter of a Mr. Benton  and a Malinda Looney . Some say that Malinda was the daughter of John Looney , a 3/4th Cherokee who was the nephew of Black Fox (Enole ) and was Principle Chief of the Old Settlers (the first batch of Cherokee that came to AR before the Trail of Tears) and Acting Chief of the Western Cherokees until Ross became Principal Chief. This Looney went to Washington DC as part of the Ross Delegation and passed away while there and is buried in the old congressional cemetery. His roll number is 2003. (This information from Pat Campbell ). This John was said to have lived in Bradley County, TN. It has also been suggested that Fereby was indeed the daughter of Jesse Benton  of VA and Sullivan Co., TN, but was not Cherokee or even Indian, at all. This came from the same Cherokee researcher who was the descendant of Doublehead. This theory has been proven to be false, as Jesse Benton's descendants are known and it is impossible to connect Fereby with this family.

!      This recent research has disproved that Fereby was the daughter of a James  or Jesse Benton . Current theory among researchers is that Fereby was the daughter of a Titus  or Lazarus Benton  of North Carolina .

My Best Theory on the ancestry of Fereby Benton :

I suspect that Fereby was part Cherokee, probably 1/4th or less, but living with the tribe until her marriage. It is known that William and Fereby moved in 1821 to Crawford County , AR , which is in Northwestern Arkansas near Short Mountain Creek, across from a large Cherokee village, until 1826 when they moved west of Cane Hill. Fereby, I believe, is not on any rolls, simply because she was not living as a Cherokee, but with her white husband. A Looney Tuskee  appeared on the 1817 Emigration Roll, and this may be, in spite of the name difference, the same man as the Looney Tol-Lem-Tees-Key in Ben Vaughan 's deposition. I think that Fereby was the daughter of Titus  or Lazarus Benton  and a Malinda Looney , and that Malinda's father was a John Looney , maybe not the same as the chief of the same name, but maybe his son or near relative. I would love to hear from anyone with information on this line, or with mere theories. E-mail me at  ecdavis@atlascomm.net

It appears that this Will, of John M. Vaughan is indeed the son of John & Nancy (Callicot) Vaughan.  As John Vaughan is not mentioned in his fathers’ will it would stand to reason that he had passed away prior to his father.

Captured By The Indians

Monroe County Man Tells Story of His Grandmother

(Special to The Telephone)

Mooresville , Ind. , Jan. 6 – Mr. and Mrs. Stokely Vaughn of Monroe county, are spending part of the winter here with their son Dr. Vaughn, and family.  Mr. Vaughn tells an interesting story of his grandmother’s capture by Indians.  He was born in Hawkins County , Tennessee , but later lived at Lexington , Ky.   When about 18 years old he was sent with two other workers to  {illeg} the home of Henry Clay, a part of the work being to lay a new hall floor of two colors of wood, one a blue, the other very dark.  While they were at work Mr. Clay would laugh, joke and dance with them, but when about official duties was quite dignified.  Mr. Vaughn also remembers distinctly of hearing Cassius M. Clay make his first abolition speech and met him frequently.  In 1849 Mr. Vaugh moved to Monroe county and in 1850 married Miss Amanda J. Sullivan.  Of twelve children born to them seven are living.  There are forty-three grandchildren and seventy four great-grandchildren.  In a few years Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn bought a farm about sixteen miles south of Bloomington .  He repaired a log schoolhouse on it and lived in it thirty four years, or until their present comfortable home was built.  The schoolhouse is one of the three log school houses still standing in Indiana .

Mr. Vaughan’s grandmother was stolen by the Indians from her home near the Virginia-Kentucky line when she was seven years old.  Her name was Mary Province , and she was with the Indians during seven years of wandering.  She told afterward they went around “heap big water” which she learned later was the Great Lakes .  They spent a winter where there were a lot of Indians and many white captives.  This place was the Indian campground near Peru , where Frances Slocum lived.  The wandering of the Indians took them through sandy deserts where cactus grew.  At the end of seven years they came to Clinch river in Kentucky .  The girl was then fourteen years old and in all her wanderings had never seen a river where the water was red except the one that ran near her home, the Clinch river, at that time being quite red.  She had studied her plan of escape and one moonlit night ran away on her pony.  She realized the river was too wide to ford so made her way at night and hid in thickets in the daytime.  At the end of two days travel up the river familiar scenes met her eye, but the people were alarmed, fearing an attack by Indians and she found no welcome until she met a relative.  Discarding her Indian garb she made herself known and was warmly welcomed home.  Many of the things learned from the Indians remained with her through life.  She was skilled in the use of the bow and arrows and greatly enjoyed shooting arrows with her grandsons.  She lived to be very old.

[xxviii] For over a hundred years, many descendants of Fereby Vaughan have wondered about her ancestry. She was said to have been born in 1745 in North Carolina and to have been a "Cherokee Indian Princess", a term that is ridiculous and somewhat insulting to anyone of the Cherokee tribe. Recent research has indicated that Fereby was probably born between 1753 and 1758. This goes against the 1850 Madison County Death Schedule, which listed her age at the time of her death in 1850 as 105 years. We descendants believe this is wrong and have some proof from earlier censuses. -
